21 Aug 10 tips when moving locally
If you are planning on moving within your city soon, you might be in the need of some guidance. Moving isn’t exactly the easiest task in the world, and can often find you met with a lot of time investment and energy drainage that you are most likely trying to avoid. There are a few steps that you can take to make your move much more organized and simpler than it would be without them. Making your move an easy venture is something we excel in, so check out our top 10 local moving tips to hopefully simplify the entire moving process for you.
1. Research moving companies
When it all comes down to finding the best moving company to tackle your upcoming local relocation, it is important to do some thorough research and find movers that will coordinate with your moving needs and budget. It is most important to find a moving company that is fully licensed and insured, as you don’t want to trust your valuables with a company that won’t be responsible for them. Call a few companies around (at least three) and request a few moving quotes before you settle on a certain one.
2. Hire movers
When you have found a company that ticks all of the boxes, it is time to give them a call and reserve them on the day of your choosing. It is best to give your movers a call at least 4-6 weeks in advance to ensure that they have an open spot for your move to take place on the date of your choosing. Provide your moving company with the details of your relocation, if there are any special items to be moved, excessively heavy items etc. If you have any specific wishes regarding your upcoming relocation, it is best to let your moving company know about them at this point.
3. To do list
Once you’ve hired your movers and got that out of the way – it is time to start focusing on your to-do list. Start writing down every task that you need to complete before the date of your move such as canceling your utilities, changing your address, defrosting your fridge, and going to your local hardware store. This way, you will ensure that there is not a single task forgotten during the process, and that your move remains organized until its completion.
4. Packing supplies
Paying a visit to your local hardware store or purchasing packing supplies online can be a good place to start. You will need boxes and other supplies that are specifically made for moving, as you want to provide your valuables with the best form of protection during the moving process so nothing gets damaged or broken during handling and transit. Make sure to also purchase padding supplies, as you don’t want your fragile items to break inside your boxes during the trip.
5. Room by room
Instead of packing without a certain strategy, it might be best to start slow and progress in smaller phases. Starting with your least used rooms, and progressing to the ones you use the most is the best way to go about your entire packing process, as there is a much smaller chance that you will be needing any items from your attic or your guest bedroom before the day of your move.
There is no better time to get rid of your unused items than now – when you will actually be going through your entire collection of possessions anyway. By creating three piles – donate, sell and throw away, you will be able to easily get rid of the item you no longer find use for and free up some space on your moving truck – and save money during the process. Every item you get rid of is one less item that will have to be loaded onto the moving truck, enabling the entire process to be completed much faster.
Creating an inventory while you are packing is extremely important, as you don’t want to leave some items behind in your old home or on your movers’ moving truck once they complete your relocation. Providing your movers with an extra copy of your inventory can also be extremely helpful, as they will be able to keep track of your belongings easily and make sure that your entire move is completed without a hitch.
8. Essentials kit
Placing your essential items into a separate bag, clear box, tote or anything similar and keeping it by your side or loading it last onto the moving truck is one of the best ways to ensure immediate access to them once you have settled into your new home. As these essentials can be unique to everyone, they often include a box cutter, a change of clothes, medication, utensils, etc.
9. Label boxes
Labeling your boxes in detail – including the room they go into, if there are any fragile or heavy items inside, and the entire list of contents that can be found in that certain box, is an easy way to keep your entire packing phase organized and enable you to unpack much faster. This might seem like an unimportant step, but having your boxes labeled in detail can make the world of a difference once you start unpacking.
10. Unpack ASAP
While unpacking won’t definitely be the first thing you will want to do once you have settled into your new home, starting as early as possible will eliminate the possibility of you putting off this process for weeks. Once you replenish your energy after your move, dive into the unpacking process and work through your boxes one by one.
